Just a curiosity really, I was just wondering what people do with their lives at the moment? Work, school. entrepreneur (jobless)?
Myself I'm in school for accounting and working part-time hell at a fun company called Minacs who handles any and all calls related to Onstar.....

In RL I work for Phelps Group an advertising and marketing agency in Los Angeles. I do quite a few things there like managing smaller accounts and doing some copy writing. I've been there for eight years and have survived a several lay off waves.

Have to say that is very impressive that you've stayed off the lay-offs, especially with the last downturn. Have to ask, is Los Angeles really the giant cesspool everyone makes it out to be?

Yes, he is very lucky. I am still trying to find a permanent position. Right now I am working two jobs. I work online from my parent's house in Obregon doing translations for my cousin who is an immigration attorney in Nogales, Arizona, and I am doing accounting work for two OXXO franchises in Obregon.
I was working at an accounting firm as a junior auditor in Orange County until they had to lay people off last June. Two years before that I was working at KMPC with Basileus in Los Angeles as one of his interns. He was a tyrant! I cannot know how I survived him.

I'm a full time student attending American River College. I'm just doing my general ed courses now (because it's cheaper than going to a regular four year school and I haven't decided on my major yet). I've got another year at ARC and then I plan on transferring to Sac State or UC Davis. I'm a part time barrista (no coffee jokes, please) at a Starbucks in Citrus Hieghts.

Yav: So.....was Los Angeles a cesspool? Lol Honestly though you guys got it tough south of the border (by which I mean the US). In Canada if you can't find a job you move to Alberta and then you have a full-time job in pretty much anything. Adr: Why do you perpetuate that by working at starbucks you are a "barrista"? Honestly you're a low paid employee who serves coffee! Hell I know many people working at Mcdonalds doing the same thing and they don't call themselves that....Not trying to be insulting but I hate it when people say that -_- I rip on my friend a lot for it

I can probably answer that for you. I was born and raised in LA. I left for San Diego and Mexico when I was in my early twenties. Yes, it is a cesspool, but not everywhere. You have to go out to the Inland Empire (San Bernardino & Riverside Counties) about 50 miles east to get away from it and still afford to live. Orange County's OK but you need to make decent bucks to live there too (it is a Republican oasis in a sea of Democrats). Traffic is horrible, horrible, horrible. There is too much "diversity" and too many minority groups. The air quality is better now than it was when I was growing up. As far as I know they don't have "Smog Alert" days when the schools would not let the kids go outside and run around because of the air pollution.

I suppose that I should post about my wonderful work life. I am a distribution center manager for a regional paint company owned by the Comex Group. They also own General Paint in Canada. I have been with the same company for 20+ years. I started off as a delivery driver in one of their stores in San Diego and slowly moved up the food chain. I'm uncomfortably comfortable there and am dying to do something else. But in this economy...

Well that pretty much reaffirms my beliefs about Los Angeles and my desire to never go there Should also note it is probably a goooooooood idea you stick it out with your job Like you said in this economy (well in the US economy) you take anything you can get.

That's very true! I go to school part time and work at Verizon as a full time employee but working 32 to 36 hours a week. My girlfirend got laid off from AT&T a couple of months ago. It's hard to make it on one income especially when you only make $11.50/hr and she's only getting $230 a week on unemployment. I had to opt out of insurance because just can't afford it. I'd love to get out of Verizon but I gotta finish school and be in a better economy situation.

Man how can you live on that amount....that'd be hard as hell especially since you guys don't get free healthcare. You don't get taxed out the ass either, but still....Well hopefully once you finish school things will get better. What you in school for anyways?

No kidding...how do you do it, Exarchos? Good Luck!
As for me, I'm a wondering soul. Don't know yet what I want to do when I grow up, hell, I'm only 19. Right now I'm working at the Los Angeles Dept of Water and Power as a facilities maintenance engineer. In other words I'm a toilet scrubbing, floor mopping, trash emptying, general clean up ghoul (AKA, a janitor) at the district office in North Hollywood. I thought I'd cut Reuscher off at the pass! Sorry I took your thunder! I just use the "FME" title to impress the ladies. Hell, half of them don't know exactly what an "FME" is. They think I'm smart, have all this training, and make all the Benjamins! Ya, Dawg!

Hmmmm that is a good strategy actually....I have to say it does make you sound impressive. Also coming from experience, don't sit around and just pick something at random to go to school for I did that for 3 years and regretted every moment of it...

Reuscher's right about that/ My nephew did that. He went to UNLV on a track scholarship and majored in political science. At the fifth semester he decided he hated it. He wasted more than half his scholarship money on something he decided he didn't want to do. Now, he's going to have to take out student loans to pay for the other classes he'll need to switch his major to--of all things--Biology. Now he wants to be some kind of "biology engineer" wokring at a pharmaceutical company. Good luck!

Because I decided to drop out of school (both here in AZ and in Mexico), I went into the construction industry. The money was great because I got on a lot of govt jobs that required prevailing wage. But, you have to save a part of that when you end up out of work for a month or two every year. Two years ago I got my painting contractor's license and am doing ok all things considered. I got contacts at three mortgage companies who signed me on to do all their rehabs on foreclosures. For now it's steady but I feel like a "ghoul" (as Dalmato puts it) because I'm going into homes that were taken away from their owners. It's wierd but someone's got to do it, right?
