Brief Overview of the Continental Union
The Continental Union was founded in February of 2010 by Imperator, Basileus, and Sabastos, also referred to as the Founding Partners. Just as any other new region, we had our ups and downs with membership and forum activities. The Founding Partners wanted to create something different from the backstabbing politics and puerile antics witnessed by them in other regions. We established a number of roleplay genres, including an active regional government.
In June of 2010, Imperator and Basileus founded the Continental Alliance, an autonomous sister region of the Continental Union established for large-scale economy roleplays. The regions have collectively hit many milestones over the last two years. Among these are: the establishment of the Founder's Charter (a comprehensive canon of constitutional law, nearly two years in the making), membership exceeding sixty nations, over seventy active offsite forum profiles, over 7,000 posts on the Unified Regional Forum, the opening of the Continental Assembly, and the establishment of various offsite forum embassies with allied regions. The Continental Union is a Charter Member of the NS Republic, an inter-regional alliance of NationStates regions.
Our Regional Government is a hybrid of a presidential republic and a constitutional monarchy. There is a Regional Chancellery that handles most day-to-day operations and the Founder’s Council, an executive council that serves as guardian of the region and is required to review all acts of government. We are a democracy if our governance is view from a "national level," but the region is not merely a central government with member nations functioning as sub-national entities. The Continental Union is more of a confederation of nations whose sovereignty is respected.
The Continental Union is considered a "defender" region in the NS military RP lexicon. We have no interest in raiding other regions unless it is done with other regions united in an alliance for "police action" or to depose a raiding authority that overthrew a legitimate authority in a region. Conflicts are part of the NS RPG apparatus. We prefer to maintain a defensive posture and engage in military actions to defend our allies. We have sent diplomatic missions (diplomatic puppet states and members with WA membership) to other regions in the past to help them solidify their power base. Defending and raiding are part of NS RPGs, and we are not opposed to either in principal. The Continental Alliance prefers neutrality but supports the Continental Union in many of its military and foreign support operations.
The Region offers a number of activities for its members, mostly based on a variety of in character (IC) roleplays, Regional Government, and out-of-character (OOC) postings in the Region's Public Tavern, The Pink Canadian. The Continental Assembly is the legislative organ of Regional Government where member nations meet to discuss Regional administrative issues.
