LAS VEGAS (AP) — Even by Las Vegas standards, it was a shocking billboard: A mannequin dangling on a hangman's noose below a black sign with the ominous words "Dying for Work."

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Jeremie Elliott says the 911 calls started coming in as the sun came up early Wednesday, with drivers worried the stiff, black-suited dummy swaying at the end of a rope along Interstate 15 near Bonanza Road was a real person.

"It's a publicity stunt, obviously done in bad taste," said Elliott, adding that officials were focused on getting it down quickly to avoid distracting drivers during the morning commute.

The graphic display along the interstate was one of at least two unauthorized signs spotted Wednesday morning in the Las Vegas area. Another found on Highland Avenue and Desert Inn Road was white with black lettering that read, "Hope You're Happy Wall St.," and a similar mannequin hanging off the edge.

A woman who answered the phone at Lamar Advertising Co., which owns one of the billboards, labeled the act vandalism and said the display was being removed. She did not provide her name.

This is great. I cannot agree with what the lady at the billboard company said about it being "...a publicity stunt, obviously done in bad taste." Maybe officially it is vandalism, but it was not done in bad taste. At least I didn't think so. This is the suicide of the middle class because of Wall Street.

This is absolutely GREAT! And you know something even funnier? I was in Vegas for a meeting with a client and actually drove by it on I-15 on my way to my client's office. It's one of those things that makes you do a double take. I didn't think it was a real person. Those hysterical people must live in la-la land if they thought it was real. Wake up and have some coffee before you dial 911 you silly people!

I like your corrected version better! At a glance, though, it does look like a person hanged themselves. There are a lot of wierdos and freaks out there anymore. Nothing seems to surprize me.

It`s not corporate America that has killed the middle class, but lazy Americans that have. Do Americans (and for that matter the West in general) truly work hard anymore? Look back at our parents and compare, now they worked hard. They struggled and advanced. Now? People want 7 weeks vacation a year, work only 4 days a week, and so on. You know what? You want to advance? Evolve your skills, never stop. Keep going to school, get various degrees and designations. Make yourself so valuable the company can`t afford to get rid of you. You say people can`t do that? Bullshit. My mother raised me and my brother alone, worked a dead end job, and went to college for 2 years every night to get a diploma. Was she tired? Hell yes, but she worked fucking hard and accomplished what she set out to do, provide for her family. Did working minimum wage, going to school, and raising a family mean corporations were keeping her down? No her earlier life choices (i.e. not going to post-secondary school) brought her to that point. But she fought, worked fucking hard and did what had to be done. Do people in a whole do that? Not at all. They sit around with what they have and complain they can`t get a job with 25 years experience working in a factory.

Buck up, work for it, and get some fucking skills.
