I thought I'd start this comment topic thread in case visitors want to post any comments or thoughts on this memorial/dedication. I'll start with my own.
I know Xanxabara's not finished with this project yet, and she'll have more things to post in her thread. I was involved in the special assignment with the Region of Islam and helped Imam Baba get things back together again. Sure, this is just a "silly game" but there are real people behind the NS masks. At first when he did not reply, I was a bit upset thinking why am I going to all this trouble just to be ignored. I felt bad once I got information about what had happened.
I honestly think that too many Americans (and Westerners) think of Arabs as violent people. No one stops to think that the actions of the few do not mean that all people in that group are the same. These people in the Arab world are not fighting to overthrow authority, they're fighting to end oppression. I agree with Xanxabara that it is a noble cause, and they deserve to live in a free society just like everyone else. Their sacrifices should be recognized just as the sacrifices our people and our troops have made to protect our freedoms here.

Very nicely put. We only see and know about the Jihadists and suicide bombers, thanks to the media. It's a shame that only the extremists that represetn a small portion of the Muslim world.

Ya they only represent the middle eastern part of it Indonesia is far bigger population wise and they don't cause any real problems

I can possibly agree with some of it. But, Sab's right you know. The media loves to grab on to these things and make people think that everyone of a certain group is a certain way. Not always true. We've got quite a few Arab students here at Cal State Chico. You wouldn't think being out in the middle of farm land. I used to avoid them and think they were evil, but they're not. One of my lab partners is from Egypt and he is just as afraid of the extremists as we are. They're just like most anyone else. They want to make a decent life for themselves and their families. The last thing on most of their minds is suicide bombings.

To be honest you're right. But the Middle East is a crap pot. You can say it's extremist, but they still exist. Do extremist Catholics exist? Not really. Almost wish they did to be honest. God too drunk to make proper argument and can't even see what I'm writing. I'll argue this matter when I can see straight

OK. It's a crap pot that started with the Jews vs the Romans, then the Crusaders, and then the Turks, and then the Britsh and French screwed the pooch REALLY hard by dividing their slices up and then expecting people in those slices to be OK with how things were divided up. No respect for groups within boundries. Look at the Kurds and hnow they're split up in four different countries. And then the Jews vs the Arabs. What a mess.
Extremist Catholics do exist. They're called "Opus Dei"

Well you are right in the statement that the British and French really cocked things up royally when they divided up the middle east. Really really bad. Worse too that Arab nations refuse to believe that they could lose to the Jews and refuse to believe the land they lost was actually lost. My god... And I don't see any catholics running planes into buildings over there Wait what the does Opus Dei do?

Now, I would not call Opus Dei extremists in a terrorist sense, but some of the fringe groups associated with it can be extremists in their ideas. I was a lay member of Opus Dei when I was younger. They are very conservative in their beliefs, almost revanchist really. They reject modern ideas and concepts put in place since Vatican II. They support the old Latin Tridentine Mass, fasting, and other traditional practices. The more extreme ones engage in self-deprivation, self-flagellation, and penitential exercises. Just like Sister Mary Catherine used to say, "It's only through suffering that you find true happiness."
They are also the ones that take "replenish the earth" very seriously...no birth control, tons of children, very traditional family values and gender role assignment. There's a lot more too, but I can go on and on. I stopped participating because I began to realize that it had become an end in itself instead of helping me to "reaffirm" my faith. They also started to push me to marry and reproduce. I was not quite ready for that.
