In November 2011, the Leader and Delegate of the Region of Islam, Imam Baba, sent the Continental Union leadership a request for diplomatic relations and assistance to help rebuild their region. They had just been liberated by the World Assembly after having experienced a prolonged power struggle to take over the region. Imperator asked for volunteers with WA membership to transfer to the region and endorse Imam Baba and assist in rebuilding the region. Adriaticus accepted the assignment and spent two months there to help.
Adriaticus worked with Imam Baba to help reconstruct a badly fractured region and to assist with recruiting efforts aimed at encouraging new members and former members that had been banned from the region by invaders. By the end of December 2011, Imam Baba stopped responding to telegrams and was not posting on the Regional Message Board. He has posted nearly every day at least once. This seemed odd to both Adriaticus and other members of the Region of Islam. By mid-January 2012, the Democratic States of Imam Baba ceased to exist.
Several members of the Continental Union and Alliance sent telegrams to several members of the Region of Islam inquiring about Imam Baba's disappearance from NationStates. Several posts were made on the Region of Islam's message board saying that IRL (in real life) Imam Baba was visiting his family in Homs, Syria and got caught up in anti-government demonstrations there. By the first part of February, the new WA Delegate for the Region of Islam sent Imperator a telegram saying that Imam Baba IRL was killed by Syrian Government forces in late December 2011. This was corroborated by another telegram received by Adriaticus with the same information from another member of that region.

Some individuals responded to the RL news that Imam Baba's death was a rouse or a roleplay scheme to explain why he was no longer in NationStates. From a moral and ethical point of view, it would be wrong to fabricate a rumor of this kind. The two sources seemed hesitant to give us any information about the incident at first. One of them--who cannot be located--had known the true identity of Imam Baba from other sites and blogs, but we were unable to contact after his last telegram.
What we do know is that many innocent people have perished at the hands of ruthless dictators in the Middle East since the "Arab Spring" began in March 2011. Syrian freedom fighters were late to the scene, but have proven to be the most persistent at removing Assad from power and installing the first truly democratic government in Syria since the early 1950's.
I chose to write this entry because one of my friends at school is from Syria, and two of her brothers have been jailed because of their activities in trying to free Syria of its despotic rulers. Another one of her brothers and two of her cousins (all under 25 years of age) were killed in Homs by government troops during the same time Imam Baba was killed.
We honor those who make the ultimate sacrifice so that others may be free to enjoy civil rights and opportunities to live in a democratic society. It is truly noble and honorable to die for the freedom of the oppressed.
